Welcome

I am excited to formally announce that the Office of Information Technology (OIT) has changed its name to the Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) to emphasize our dedicated focus on data and technology solutions for research. Our new name clarifies and reinforces our mission to support the UCLA community engaged in digital research and scholarship, and it highlights our closer working relationship with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities (ORCA).

OARC support and capabilities will continue to be centered around our teams of technologists organized in areas of specialization called Research Technology Groups (RTGs). For those who already use OIT’s research services and interface with the RTGs, the services available will not change. Our RTGs provide frontline research support and services. They also work with faculty to develop contemporary data and technology practices for researchers based on patterns of campus need. Our current set of RTGs provides a rich combination of research capabilities:

•           Computational science

•           GIS and visualization

•           HPC systems

•           Mobile research, cloud, and IoT data

•           Research data and web platforms

•           Statistical methods and data analytics

Our new name also marks strengthened relations with and continuing campus expectations for the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE), a faculty-led partnership for advising the campus on UCLA’s digital research, and the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), a national public-private partnership sponsored by the Department of Energy to address advanced data and modeling for physical operating systems and IoT applications scaled to national adoption. Both IDRE and CESMII are jointly sponsored and supported by the Vice Provost IT and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities.

As we recalibrate our focus on contemporary frameworks for gathering, managing, analyzing, modeling, and visualizing research data, we look forward to continuing to serve UCLA researchers.

Sincerely,

Jim Davis

Vice Provost IT
