UCLA's OIT Director Jim Williamson has co-authored "Consenting Adults? Privacy in an Age of Liberated Learning Data," an EDUCAUSE article exploring issues around learning data privacy. The article highlights the growing need for awareness around the promises and potential misuse of topics such as faculty and student learning content, online tracking data, algorithmic transformations, and intellectual property.

The article is rooted in the “University of California Learning Data Privacy Principles and Recommended Practices,” a draft document from the UC-wide Educational Technology Leadership Committee. The “Principles” have been presented to faculty and administrative groups across the UC campuses, and is being revised as more feedback is obtained. The goal of the “Principles” is to contribute to and inform the conversation about appropriate uses of institutional, student and faculty learning data.
